New! Meet Henrietta {The Story of Little Red Riding Hen}

I spent my summer dreaming up the world of Henrietta. A new twist on the beloved childhood story, little red riding hood. Meet Henrietta. The little red riding hen. She's sweet. She's pink. And, she carries with her a basket of eggs! Oh, and always with her little red cloak, of course, on her way to grandmother's (hen) house ...

The inspiration for Henrietta is also based on a true story (ok ... sort of. ha!). My mother-in-law lives in Idaho near a quaint little area that overflows with tall pines and all sort of wild and wooly things. It's a real treat to visit! And, on her property roam these odd little creatures called guinea hens. Have you seen them?

The story goes ... While the guinea hens peck around their hen house, a big bad wolf can sometimes be spotted nearby. And, every now and then, a guinea hen goes missing! Eek!

I like to think that the hens are off tromping around the forest somewhere (and just haven't been found yet. fingers crossed!). So the idea of Henrietta unfolded ...

Henrietta meanders her way through the apple trees on the way to grandma's house. A slew of red-capped mushrooms and woodland friends meet Henrietta along the way.


The Henrietta toiletries line, which includes hand creme, soap and bath wash, offers a fresh and uplifting aroma of sweet spearmint and soft florals. I find the aroma familiar and comforting and perfectly suited for this playful collection.

My story and the heartbeat behind Nostalgia featured in a new book!

I've been keeping mum about an exciting new book that's hitting the shelves today! Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to share my journey creating Nostalgia for a new book called, Indie Brands: independent brands that inspire and tell a story.

The book offers a real-world glimpse into the lives of the people behind the brands featured: what they create, the space they work in and the inspiring items they surround themselves with. My creative space and desk (eeek!) and all sorts of personal things that inspire me everyday are featured.

When I saw the completed book, I was excited to discover that two of my personal favorites were also included: Jake Nickell of threadless.com (for the coolest tees, ever!) and Nalden of wetransfer.com (I use this service weekly!).  

The video above offers a little more about the book (psst ... can you spot me? Is that a bird standing on my head! ha!). The book is available at book stores or online retailers around the globe. If you have a chance to read my story, please send me a note and tell me so? I really tried to offer transparency into the creation and everyday life of my work. I'm always inspired by other people's stories, especially as it relates to creativity and perseverance. So I hope my story and experiences with Nostalgia offer something valuable, too.

Nostalgia may very well be one of the last to jump on the wagon. The facebook fan wagon, that is.  But we crossed a huge milestone today and found our little nook on facebook. News! New Design Book Featuring Nostalgia

 
I'm excited to tell you about a new book titled, New Eco-Style Graphics, by Kaoru Takahashi for Pie Books. The book features my packaging design for Nostalgia along with a lot of inspiring product designs from eco-conscious brands around the world.  Here is little excerpt from the book's description on Amazon:

"The products featured in this book stand out among others for their considered and unique graphic design, often simple but suggesting honesty and integrity. Their dedication to the quality of their materials also carries over to their brand concepts and packaging."

How nice is that! The book is currently available in some countries, but will be released here in the states in September. Take a look at some more pages from inside the book and pre-order here. This really is a wonderful book for packaging designers and those looking for new eco-style products and services. I've flipped through my copy a number of times and always find something interesting and new.
